How to upload subtitles to YouTube

Important note: The easiest way to upload subtitles to YouTube is through the Publish tab (when editing a video). For more information see the Publish help page.

So you've worked hard and created subtitles to your video. How do you add them to YouTube so that everyone who sees the video there can see the subtitles?

Note: Only the video author (the one who uploaded the video to YouTube) can add subtitles to the video. If you're not the author, you can try contacting the author and recommend that he would upload the subtitles by following this tutorial.

For the rest of this tutorial, I assume you've already created the subtitles for your video and just want to upload them to YouTube, if you need help creating the subtitles, go to the YouTube Subtitler Help Center.

Step 1 - Login to YouTube
Go to and login with your user and password. If you don't login, you won't have permission to upload the subtitles in a later step.

Step 2 - Download the subtitles
Go to the view page of your video within YouTube Video Subtitler. The video is shown on the left-hand side. On the right hand side you'd probably see the subtitles. Click on the 'Info & Options" tab as shown below:

This is how the Info & Options tab looks like:

Click on the "down arrow" to download the subtitles. Once you click on the arrow, you'll see the following options:

Click on the 'Download' button to save a copy of the subtitles on your computer.

Step 3 - Upload subtitles to YouTube
Click on the 'here' link within the box titled 'Is this your video?' You should get to a page within YouTube where you can add the subtitles you just downloaded.

Remember the link will only work if you're already logged in to YouTube with your YouTube account. Since YouTube Subtitler is an external site, it has no way of knowing you're actually logged in to YouTube or not (for privacy reasons, which is good).

  1. Do begging someone to add your captions/subtitles you worked so hard on, makes subtitling of videos in Youtube with Google applications really pointless.
I don't understand why Youtube hasn't such feature that everyone who wants to, would be able to add subtitles to any videos. There are many-many videos more people would share and watch if there has convenient possibility to add subtitles them by people inspired and willing to do that. It would only improve the site and drives more attraction towards it.

  2. indeed. you are absolutely right. dotsub is the only site where you can do this, but the view count is pretty far from youtube. at youtube you have voice recognition based closed caption which is totally worthless.

  3. What do you mean? yt-subs also allows you to add subtitles for any video (not just dotsub). As for the reasoning for not allowing this on YouTube, this seems quite obvious - if this was allowed on YouTube spammers would use this to inject junk on videos. They're not interested as long as you're as small as yt-subs, etc.

  4. "oneandzerotalk" OK. If I understand you, it means that we should forbid all the E-mails, because there exists also spamms... Well, I am for subtitle-ing. Let's say there is a video and there are 20 people who could give 20 different languages. Should they copy 20 times this video??? Or should they reasonably subtitle the same video? -- I think the right solution would be, if everyone could show this video in his own channel and could give there his own subtitle to the same video.

  5. An easy solution would be to let anyone submit a subtitle to any video to the YouTube uploader... then that person gets an alert, and can choose to use that subtitle track or not (accept or reject it).

  6. @rajgy - What you suggest is nice, but that would be up to YouTube to implement this.

@VideoLeadsOnline - That's also a good solution, but unfortunately, the YouTube API doesn't support sending messages to a video owner. If this option was available, I would have implemented what you suggested.
